Overview
Did you know that over 40% of men between the ages of 40 and 70 experience erectile dysfunction (ED)? It’s a pretty frustrating condition that can be pretty hard to deal with. So naturally, people are always looking for ways to solve their ED problems.
Modern medicine and extensive research have brought multiple new treatments for erectile dysfunction that accommodate different needs for men across the world. At SMS Colorado, we only administer treatments that are FDA approved. Not to mention our erectile dysfunction treatments have a 98% success rate with all our patients!
What Is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?
Erectile dysfunction (ED) refers to the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse. During stressful periods, it’s common for men to experience this condition.
ED affects millions of men worldwide. In the United States alone, nearly 30 million men have ED. While men over 75 years old are more likely to have this condition, younger men (in their 20s) can experience it too. It’s easy to give up and opt to live with erectile dysfunction after trying unsuccessful methods, sometimes even invasive ones.
How Do You Know If You Have Erectile Dysfunction?
There is never a direct answer from recognizing occasional symptoms as erectile dysfunction. Seeing a licensed professional from a clinic is the easiest and most efficient way to diagnose ED.
Intermittent or occasional sexual problems do not always point to diagnosed ED. However, if you have symptoms that are persistent or long-lasting you could be dealing with erectile dysfunction (ED). The most common persistent symptoms to be on the lookout for are:
Inability to get an erection
Inability to maintain an erection
Diminished desire for sex
You may also be at a higher risk for ED if you:
Are overweight
Use tobacco, drugs, or alcohol
Are getting older
If you are taking medications that are identified as high blood pressure medications, antidepressants, or antihistamines
Suffer from heart disease or diabetes
If you are undergoing medical treatment involving radiation treatment for cancer
Suffering from a previous injury that may have damaged nerves or arteries that have an effect on gaining an erection
If you have been diagnosed with a psychological condition like depression, anxiety, or stress
If you have been diagnosed with digestive and kidney diseases
Your medical history or an underlying cause can be an indicator to how susceptible you may be to being diagnosed with erectile dysfunction. Different known risk factors are apparent in different people with how they lead their lifestyle, however, there are some health factors you can control and others that you cannot control.
Erectile dysfunction and restricted blood flow to blood vessels
Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or keep an erection hard enough to have sexual intercourse. But you still must ask, how does that happen, and why? Anything that has the potential to limit blood flow to the penis can cause what we know as ED. There are health and medical reasons that limit blood flow, but there are also conditions and actions that have the same effect–smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, aging, and diabetes can limit the flow of blood to where you need it.
Because there can be decreased blood flow to penile arteries, if you are experiencing these ED symptoms, you will want to check the blood flow to other vital organs such as your heart. It is common that the start of ED can lead to higher chances of having a heart attack or other cardiovascular health risks.
Erectile Dysfunction Treatment Options
Now that you understand what erectile dysfunction is and how to identify symptoms of erectile dysfunction, you will want to understand the medical treatments to treat erectile dysfunction or to improve erectile dysfunction symptoms. Let’s find out different treatments to reverse erectile dysfunction and transform erectile dysfunction into erectile function!
The most common forms of ED treatment options include injections, shock wave therapy, oral medications, over the counter medications, penis pumps/surgery/implants, alternative medicine, exercise, and counseling.
At SMS Colorado we diagnose and treat erectile dysfunction with the most effective treatment, Tri-mix penile injections.
Penile Injections
Penile injections are our primary treatment for ED. We use Trimix injections, this prescription medication is very effective, affordable, and very safe with low risks. There are various injection options, but we have determined that Trimix is the best for our customers.
Papaverine, phentolamine, and prostaglandin E1 are the mix of medications in Trimix. Trimix injections are inserted directly into the penis which causes the inducement of an erection. This drug has been approved by the FDA for 25+ years and leaves over 70% of men who receive the treatment happy in life and in bed.
It’s easy to give up and opt to live with erectile dysfunction after trying unsuccessful methods, sometimes even invasive ones. Many people don’t realize that Trimix is better than natural methods experimented with for erectile dysfunction, as it’s safer and easier. It is always better to go the safer route when dealing with one of the most important body parts.
Acoustic Wave Therapy
Shock wave therapy, also known as low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy (Li-ESWT), is a minimally invasive procedure for fixing erectile dysfunction. It can be done at home using the right equipment under the supervision of a medical professional such as a doctor or physician. Shockwave therapy is rather new, so the research and results around it are still under revision. Chances are you might have even heard of shockwave therapy referred to as acoustic wave therapy.
Shockwave therapy encourages blood flow to the penis by forming new blood vessels through a process called neovascularization. New blood vessels are stronger than their predecessors, which can return normal erections to the person suffering from ED. This treatment is minimally invasive and uses soft sound waves to heal erectile tissue and remove obstructions such as plaque from blood vessels. Wave therapy seems to last much longer than using pills because the shock waves applied to the erectile tissue work to heal the tissue itself. Rather than calm them down or excite them, they remove the plaque buildup inside the vessels.
The success rate of shock wave therapy isn’t substantial and there is no guarantee that it will work for you. Regardless, this treatment does work for a few patients but comes with a hefty price for not knowing if it will work or not (2.5K to 3K). The overall success rate is low compared to our standards here at SMS, so we generally don’t recommend it to our patients.
We here at SMS Colorado want the absolute best for our patients. We don’t trust or use any treatments or procedures for erectile dysfunction that are not FDA-approved. Therefore, we do not practice wave therapy ED.
Oral Medications
Oral medication is the most popular form of ED treatments and prescription medication that is meant for increasing blood flow. Taking ED pills cures the problem on the spot (improve penile blood flow) but not forever, you will be faced with the same problem the next day. Prescription drugs to treat ED are most commonly:
Sildenafil (Viagra)
Vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn)
Tadalafil (Cialis)
Avanafil (Stendra)
There are also many side effects from taking these ED drugs. The most common effects are:
Flushing
Headaches
Indigestion
Visual changes like sensitivity to light or blurred vision
Nasal congestion
Back pain
Low blood pressure
Chest pain
You will want to consider each risk factor with your doctor. Ironically, with oral medications, you can suffer from a prolonged erection which can be painful.
Doctors treat erectile dysfunction differently but consider what treatment option is best for you. In this process, your doctor may run blood tests, conduct a systematic review, discuss physical causes of blood flow problems, and discussing sexual experiences to determine the best ED treatments for you to move forward with.
Over The Counter Drugs Or Medications
Similar to alternative medicine drug therapy, there are different OTC medications like DHEA, L-arginine, ginseng (herbal remedy), Yohimbe (herbal remedy), and propionyl-L-carnitine. These medications are effective for different people and not always entirely safe.
OTC treatments can interact with other meds taken for ED, making the supplements a no-go. For example, using an OTC drug containing sildenafil while already consuming another med with nitrates as one of the ingredients can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure and reduce blood flow. It is a waste of time and effort to get rid of a problem just to face another by combining too many medications.
At SMS Solutions we support what people want to do with their own bodies but strongly encourage men to make educated decisions with a professional in the field to find the most effective and best treatment. Making an educated decision with a professional, you can count on the fact that the right treatment for you will work with current medications you are on as well as recognize any underlying health conditions you have on an individual basis.
Penis Pumps, Surgery, or Penile Implants
Rather than prescription drugs or medication, surgical treatments may be brought up as an option. There are two primary procedures: penile implants or vascular surgery. Penile implant surgeries involve a penile prosthesis being placed at the head of the penis, either an inflatable one (penis pump) or a malleable implant (adjust the penis manually). Vascular reconstructive surgery adjusts arteries that might be blocked, helping to restore the right amount of flow to the penis.
These surgeries are unfortunately not an option for everyone. Younger men are better candidates for this procedure compared to older men. Implant procedures commonly have an excruciating recovery period and is also quite expensive.
The treatments offered at SMS Colorado are 98% effective, affordable, and do not cause pain.
Alternative Medicine
Alternative medicine, natural methods, and herbal remedies may sound like a good choice, but many of these options tend to be short lived and not as reliable as other treatments. These treatment options can be expensive overtime and are not always regulated, which could be proven difficult for those with allergies. Alternative medicine, like all other medicine and treatments can have potentially dangerous side effects. Regardless, there have been studies that have proven some natural remedies to be natural aphrodisiacs to give you an extra boost for the physical activity you will be engaging in.
Based on studies, the top 5 most effective herbal remedies for treating ED are:
Panax ginseng
Maca
Yohimbine
Ginkgo
Mondia whitei
The various herbal remedies can potentially improve libido, releive associated stress and mental health issues associated with ED, prolong erections, and increase low testosterone levels. However, this process is not guaranteed to work for every man but is an alternative to medicated, injected, and shock wave ED treatment.
Other Treatments
There are various other ED treatments such as sex therapy, testosterone replacement therapy, a vacuum erection device/vacuum device to improve blood flow to the penis.
Sex therapy is a unique option that is best used as an adjunct treatment for ED; this typically involves going with your sexual partner to simply talk about your sex life with ED. Sexual dysfunction happens and it is crucial to be on the same page with your sexual partner to overcome any embarrassment or worries that happen during sexual intercourse. It is crucial to know that ED is common and can happen to anyone– male sexual dysfunction happens.
Testosterone therapy is good for men with low levels of this hormone but doesn’t mean that it can fix ED– we are here to help correct that misconception! There is not a correlation between low testosterone and ED according to various studies. Therefore, testosterone shouldn’t even be in the back of your mind if you want an effective option, but we still wanted to bring awareness to it.
Vacuum erection chambers/devices simply pump blood to stimulate the penile vessels that need it. This treatment is not pricey but is not always effective for every individual. The pump itself can be complicated, it has different components with a different function: a plastic tube, a pump, and an elastic ring. It is a difficult and timely method, overall, not very straightforward. If not used correctly you could possibly cause minor bleeding down there, which does not sound very fun or sexy.
SMS Colorado recommends a different option that is 98% effective and much easier than most of the treatments described above.
